How to Feed Your Dog for Less

There is no doubt that the little pooch in your home is no less than your kid. But, why treat them differently from your own kids? Confused?

When it comes to your kids shopping, you look for discounted products and look for deals whereas for the pooch you look for best of the dog food and chews. No No, there is nothing wrong with this attitude. But, how about if you can save money without compromising on the diet of your pooch?!

Being a dog owner you will not want to feed the “little furry” dog food that is equivalent to junk food.  But, then again, overspending on premium dog food is also not a pleasing thought. Here are some tips to feed your dog for less and save some money in times of financial instability.

Rely on whole food items

Supplement the furry ball’s diet with the best possible food. Best food doesn’t mean pizza or pasta or frozen dog food. Rather it includes fresh ground beef, chicken, broccoli, sweet potatoes and carrots. Research shows that feeding whole food diets to the furry ball improves immune health. But before making any changes, don’t forget to consult the vet. They will suggest you the best recipe to prepare healthy and nutritious food at home.

Buy in bulk

Cooking a large quantity of dog food is quite economical in comparison to buying proteins in small chunks. As per qualified vets, you must buy starches or potatoes in 5 or 10 pounds bag and store in clean, dark and dry place to save big bucks. For the packaged dog food, buying in quantity will surely prove to be cheaper. Check out VoucherBin, for latest deals and coupons from major pet stores.

Make the food in large quantities

If you rely on dog food, majorly because you are short of time, then there is good news for you. You can boil the pooch’s food weekly or monthly and preserve it for later. Chop the veggies at the beginning of the week and store them in the plastic containers in the refrigerator and serve them accordingly.

Shop around

Just like you shop around when buying your kids back to school items or clothes, shop around for the dog food ingredients. There are many stores that sell cod fillet for cheap. Some of the times you save as much as $4 for pound. That is huge savings, isn’t it?

Last, smart tip is to buy the meats at discounted prices when they near the expiry date at the stores. As you will cook the meat and freeze it, there is no risk involved. Just ensure that the quality of meat is good and your pooch will love the meal.

All these tips will help you save more than $50 every month otherwise spent on buying dog food.

  1. I don’t know many people with pets who are trying to save money, but the ones I do, do NONE of the things you’ve mentioned. I think many people don’t look toward their pet when trying to save money.

  2. I found it very interesting where you said “When it comes to your kids shopping, you look for discounted products and look for deals whereas for the pooch you look for best of the dog food and chews.” I don’t have kids, but this does apply to how I shop for myself. I only spend aobut $120/month on food for myself, but for my dogs I spend about $40. Yes, this is less than what I spend on myself, but they are getting near to top quality dog food, while I shop sales and scrimp and save to stay within my $120 budget for myself most months. I think a re-arrangement of priorities may be in order even though I love my pets.
